Just Let Your Writing Go

By Catherine Franz

Words!  We get lost in them, they tell us what to do, and they even control our destiny.  They can get people to fall in love and even create family feuds. They take you into your past and the hope for a brighter future.

The heroine and villains come and go in exotic places or in your home.  Places that don't exist or you want to go.  They take us to Mars, back, and all on our lunch break.

Writers have more power then we want to admit.  Writer's can create their own possibilities.  And in their world, nothing is impossible.

This will unblock anyone's creativity.  On that note, let’s get started.  It’s playtime now, so let’s expand your mind and create whatever you want.  If you need to let the child in you out, go ahead.  There aren’t any boundaries, just possibilities and imagination.

Start with a passionate theme, one you are just curious, or something that couldn't possibly exist.  What about a character or object.  Let them out, let them flow, anything goes.  Imagine the possibilities.

Themes: deception, irony, love lost, infidelity, rejection, holidays, celebrations
Characters: chemist, divorced woman, doctor, teacher, singer, coach, consultant, teacher, lawyer, model, sex object
Key object: yellow bag, pen, knife, shoe, fuse box, desk, lamp, phone, computer
Settings: space colony, gym, park, lab, retirement home, restaurant, bar, Europe, Asia, California, Canada, Australia

Mix one of the above with one of these -- or make your own:

o  Write a story about love lost, with a doctor as the main character and a shoe as the key object. Set your story in a park.

o  Write a story about infidelity, with a chemist as the main character and a pen as the key object. Set your story in a gym.

o  Write a story about deception, with a singer as the main character and a yellow bag as the key object. Set your story in a space colony.

o  Write a story about rejection, with a divorced woman as the main character, and a knife as the key object. Set your story in a retirement home.

o  Write a story about irony, with a teacher as the main character and a fuse box as the key object. Set your story in a lab.

Mix and match the themes, characters, key objects and settings. You can come up with more than 30 possibilities just using the ones already given.

Write stories…let the spirit got…let your imagination soar and possibilities appear.  The barriers and blocks will fall and new wants will begin to be attracted to you!
